Java Monkey: Abridged

It’s no Starbucks, and you can tell that even before you walk inside. After all, what coffee shop with a mischievous monkey as its logo could be bad?

The coffee shop in question is Decatur’s Java Monkey, a place where automatic espresso is unwelcome and hidden talent often discovered. The Monkey’s baristas are among those with the hardcore training to make real cappuccino and espresso.

Perhaps it’s no wonder, then, that Decatur’s numerous artists and poets frequent the place. In a sense, a skillfully-made cup of coffee or tea is a work of art: it requires talent, practice, and a love of the process.

Along with its fantastic beverages, Java Monkey offers many freshly baked muffins, pastries, salads and sandwiches. If you’ve the time, the food makes a great complement to any of their famed coffee concoctions.

Lest you think that it’s all about food and drink, however, it’s imperative that you stop by on Sunday nights for “Java Monkey Speaks,” the event which often redefines the concept of “poetry.” There’s a bit of Dylan, Tom Waits, and possibly the soul of Allen Ginsberg echoed in these powerful displays.

So drop by, and let Java Monkey speak to you.
